Hi, im just doing a university architecture project on Radiant House and i'm currently doing research on the golden eagle and i was wondering...does any one know if it represents something within the building? and how did it make people feel when they saw it above the oynx fire place? just that in my building i want to base it on the past within radiant house, and id be happy to hear peoples thoughts about it in the past, thanks

I went to the Mardi in the late sixties early seventies when they had all the great U.S. soul acts Edwin Starr, Jimmy Ruffin, Ben E King and countless others mainly on Friday and Saturdays the acts would then do a session at the Victoriana,The Real Thing then were called Vocal Perfection they were great nights, I am surprised there has never been a Mardi Gras revival night similar to the Wigan Casino, Twisted Wheel, The Torch,Blackpool Mecca, Im sure it would be a success. Great DJs with all the latest imports ie Billy Butler and great ads in the Liverpool Echo when there were many clubs being advertised each week, Beachcomber,Babaloo,Odd Spot,All Fours,Hotsy Totsy, and more i cant remember.Yes they were great nights.

What a club! I saw Arthur Conley (Sweet Soul Music) live on the Mardi, I would love to know who the musicians were backing him, mainly because I think I read somewhere that these artistes used to use local musicians. I also saw Colonel Bagshots Incredible Bucket Band (to give them their full title) on the Mardi, and became a lifetime fan even to this day. Also The Real Thing, before they became Real Thing. (Cant remember what they were called back then. Great days indeed.

I have two abiding memories of Bold Street from the 60s. The first was the El Kabala, which was THE place to be. I used to sit drinking coffee in there with friends, and we'd chat to Roger McGough and John Gorman. I used to smoke Sobranie Cocktail cigarettes, which cost a fortune but which were, oh, so cool!

My other clear memory is of the Jaguar car showroom, halfway up on the right hand side as you're walked up from the city centre. There used to be a Jaguar E type 2 2 in the window, I think it was British Racing Green, though I might have made that up, but whatever, it gleamed, polished to perfection, and begged me to buy it every time I stood drooling over it.

I haven't been to Liverpool in years, (I've lived in East Anglia for 35 years) but I'm up in September to look around old haunts, so I'll be paying a visit.

Thanks for the memories guys. They've been a joy to read.

Hmm. I wonder what that means in reality. Portobello Road and Notting Hill in general are what they are because of 170 years of history (well - over a thousand, but only 170 odd year of anything interesting).

I would have thought that you can't just "make" an area into Portobello Road, but good luck to 'em I suppose!

is there a transcript of the question and answer segment you mentioned?

I am trying to trace an employee of the Liverpool Gas Co. - a herbert Nicoll - who is credited with a patent from the 1930's - any idea who I could speak to about former employees?

Hi

My Great Great Grandmother was Mary Byrne (Hawkins) the sister of John Byrne of John Byrne and sons Bold St. He came from Co Wexford Ireland and lived with my Great Great Grandfather William Hawkins in 1861 in Court Cazenau St a slum off Upper Beau St near Scottie Rd.
He took 10 years to become a watchmaker and jeweller and had 9 kids one of whom (Dr Ferdinand Byrne) was a dentist. He moved to London to practice and his daughter Natalie married into the Wolff family. Her husban Freddie won an olympic gold medal in 1936 Berlin in the 400m relay. The family owned the London metal exchange and nearly all the family had MBE's and whatnot. I have found references in very old telephone directories for Liverpool but little else after 1910. The family lived at Greenbank Rd, Toxteth Pk for many years and the large house is still there.

I would welcome any further info you may have from 1910 onwards, living in N.Ireland I get little chance to get over to Liverpool now.

Oh the mardi gras .... what a great venue. Memorable gigs: Primal Scream, Jonathan Richman, the redoubtable Benny Profane too but that was as a support - can't remember who for ... or was that NYE Cafe Berlin.

Anyway great memories bringing back the taste of lager and black and curry and chips and beer on someone else's lips ...
